lyrics

I was up in the valley on Saturday
Your folks were outside shaking hands
Should have told them just how much you mattered
The words slipped through my fingers like sand
The Royal Canadian Legion
I'd spent many nights there before
We drank in unholy communion
And we painted the air with your lore

Faces from drunken encounters jogging memories
They're all together now
I dodged the bullet that sunk you
Still took a few more years to come around

There's people I love I can count on
And some who I can't, though I've tried
And a few who could call me at three in the morn
And I'd rush to be there by their side
You stood at my side for the eulogy
Compassionate warmth in your eyes
And I thought to myself about how lucky I am
Just to know such a beautiful guy

All the miles behind us, dark places
Took you as a warning sign
One more for the body count
One more drink to this friend of mine

I last saw your face at the funeral
You were hanging out under the arm
Of some dude in shamanic regalia
Under the spell of his mystical charm
The spark we had unconsummated
Still glad to call you a friend
And we lamented the grim circumstances
That brought our paths together once again

Stepping out into sunset, quiet exit
Didn't want to say goodbye
One more night in the land of the living
In the golden hour of the golden summertime
